News Across- Citizenship in Lebanon between Men and Women
Citizenship in Lebanon between Men and Women is a recently published book in Beirut by (Dar Al- Jadid Publishing House), prepared and edited by Najla Hamadeh, Jean Makdisi, and Su’ad Joseph. The book contains the research papers that were presented in a conference held at the American University of Beirut in 1997, under the same title. The papers present cultural, legal, and pedagogic topics from a gender-sensitive perspective. One of these subjects is the issue of the absence of equality between men and women in transmitting citizenship. A Lebanese mother who is married to a non-Lebanese, just like Egyptian mothers, cannot give Lebanese nationality to her husband or children. Other issues include women’s work, Palestinian refugee women in Lebanon, laws governing religious sects, gender discrimination in penalty laws, etc. In general, the editors of the book maintain that the feminist approach to social reform has become a necessity at the present time.
