The Lebanese Center for Policy Studies (LCPS) is an independent, non-profit research institute based in Beirut. It is concerned with issues of political, social, and economic development. The LCPS has managed to win a contract to house the Middle East Research Competition (MERC). The purpose of this research-award program is to give social scientists based in the Arab countries and Turkey financial support to undertake research. It is also open to expatriate scholars who have been residing in an Arab country or Turkey and affiliated with an institution there for the past five years. Applicants must have at least a master’s degree or its equivalent. They must submit a detailed research project proposal which contains a statement of the research question, relevance and importance of the research, selective literature review, research methodology, implementation, schedule, budget, plans for publication and dissemination, curriculum vitae, format. The research project is accepted in Arabic, English, French. The research itself can also be undertaken and published in Turkish. Completed research proposals are due in the MERC office twice a year: 15 December or 15 June. Five leading social scientists from different Arab countries and Turkey form a selection committee. The program has been previously managed by the Ford Foundation in Cairo and it has provided many grants over the past years to researchers from the Middle East and North Africa.
