Mervat F. Hatem
Mervat Hatem is Professor of Political Science at Howard University in Washington DC. She was president of the Middle East Studies Association in 2008. She has published more than 50 journal articles and book chapters on gender and politics in the Middle East and in North America. She earned her MA from the American University in Cairo in 1975. She then continued her graduate studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where she earned her Ph.D. in political science in 1982. Her work examines, among other things, the phenomenon of Egyptian state feminism, the impact of the economic and political liberalization on Egyptian and Arab women, the convergence of Islamist and secular views on gender. More recently, she has finished a manuscript inspired by the works of Aisha Taymur, a famous Egyptian woman writer.
