Summary
This book is a collaborative project that introduces the general Arab reader to the fields of gender studies and women’s issues in the Arab and Egyptian cultural sphere. The book covers a variety of themes such as education, issues of resistance, gender equality and cultural stereotyping, law, women's movements, and women pioneers in several fields. The presentation is characterized by both the historical dimension and current debates. Most importantly, it utilizes an appealing combination of written information, documentary material and archive pictures, cartoons, designs, and humor to introduce debates to the lay reader. It is a WMF group effort and is co-authored by Hoda Elsadda, Omaima Abou-Bakr, Rania Abdel-Rahman, Hala Kamal, Sahar Sobhi and Hoda El-Saadi. It is illustrated by Maher Sabri and Sara Enani. "This book is a daring, beautiful and encouraging step from the Women and Memory Forum. Let it be the first of steps towards a new feminist awakening."--Iman Bibars "This book represents a serious attempt at spreading feminist awareness, employing the art of cartoon to clarify the social bases of gender relations and to put segregation cultures in their historical context."--Soheir Morsy "When unjust bias comes to be taken for granted socially, becoming a norm that people do not even notice in their daily lives, any party that awakens our awareness and draws our attention to the daily crimes we commit unconsciously is one that deserves praise."--Mohammed Birairi "The book has taken away from my reservations, taking my hand and making me listen. These are words that truly deserve listening to."--Mohammed El Rakhawi "An excellent work from the Women and Memory Forum that stays in our memory and in which we meet the best of what Egyptian women have given and still do."--Malak Hashem
